i never thought i would have one.
BUT it appears i do. {for now at least} {and you could never tell by looking at him}
we have been through a similar stage before and i thought we had broken out of it. at least a little bit.
BUT i was wrong, again.
i am a HUGE fan/proponent/supporter of family dinners. every single night growing up, unless we had a babysitter, we had family dinner. usually around 6:30pm. i never knew anything different. now i have my own family and, while stephen and i may eat together every night, its usually {GASP} in front of the tv. and bennett is already asleep.
this is not without opposition from me. stephen comes home from working 12 hour days and honestly just wants to plop down in his chair and veg after bennett goes to sleep. i cant blame him, really, but i am hoping this changes as bennett gets older {aka soon}.
since bennett eats and goes to sleep before we eat dinner, he doesnt always eat the same thing. sometimes he eats leftovers, but these days he turns his nose up to almost everything you put in front of him {except his beloved "honey bread" - which is basically PB, bread, and a wee bit of honey instead of jelly} {and ps. if he doesnt eat what we give him for dinner then he doesnt get dinner. so he is NOT having honey bread every night!! not making that mistake}
he loves fruit, mostly - although his recent boycott of berries has almost driven me batty - and he could survive off of applesauce, yogurt, bread, bananas, cereal, cheese, fig newtons, and oatmeal.
but one cannot survive off these things alone i tell you - i refuse to believe it!!!
i am desperate.
i would love to hear some ways your get your children to eat their veggies/unfamiliar foods.
what do your kids eat for dinner at night?
what do you pack in their lunches for MDO/school?
and here is a yummy simple recipe that my sisters and i grew up on, and bennett loves as well {that doesnt necessarily fix my child's eating issues, but it does give me some variation in packing his lunch for MDO!}:
Pimento and Cheese
{or "puhmennandcheese"}
8 ounces shredded cheddar cheese
4 ounce jar pimentos, undrained
2 tsp mustard
mayonaise
mix ingredients together with enough mayo to coat and spread. serve with crackers or as a sandwich.
thanks in advance!

Hey! I was actually going to post this recipe on my blog bc Rose loves it so much but here it is because who knows when I will actually post on mine! I've been using www.wholesomebabyfood.com to get ideas for making baby food and that's where the recipe came from. I make a big batch, freeze, and reheat a few patties at a time. Rose gobbles them up! Clark and I like them too :)
ReplyDeleteBroccoli & Cheddar Cheese Nuggets
Ingredients:
1 16-oz Package frozen broccoli, cooked, drained, and chopped
1 cup Seasoned bread crumbs
1 ½ cups Shredded cheddar cheese
3 Large eggs
Directions:
1. Heat oven to 375 and lightly coat a baking sheet with olive oil and set aside.
2. Combine all remaining ingredients and mix well.
3. Shape mixture into nuggets. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, turn nuggets over after 15 minutes. Serve warm
Maybe you could try shaping them into different shapes that B likes. That might make them more interesting! Hope this helps :)
We have a picky eater, too! She loves corn on the cob... I think maybe it is just fun to eat. We seem to have the same issues, though!
ReplyDeleteOh oh do I feel your pain! Simms loves ketchup and any sauce really,and we began putting it on veggies, meats, and magically iy jas turned her on to these foods now! She loves broccoli, cauliflower, etc. Now she'll eat them wout sauces!
ReplyDeleteI think it's just that age. Sipsey will eat anything...IF she's in the mood for it. We will give her stuff she loves (mini homemade pizzas, for example) and she'll gobble them up one week and turn her nose up the next! She usually ends up eating Chex mix, pretzels, fruit snacks, a fruit cup, or raisins for dinner. I know that sounds awful but that is only after we have tried giving her at least 4 different things. She loves chicken noodle soup, pizza, sandwich meat and cheese, and spaghetti, to name a few. But she'll turn her nose up at all that many times.
ReplyDeleteI am also a fan of family dinners, but I think maybe they are still too young for that. Sipsey wants to eat AT 5:15, and we just don't have time to have anything ready for ourselves that early. We usually wait until she has gone to bed to eat (7:30). It's MUCH more peaceful and enjoyable that way! I hope you figure something out for b man!
Well, Lexi just turned one, so we're not onto this problem yet, but we have our own little issues. She LOVES to eat and will try anything. But lately, she doesn't seem to want the same thing for dinner two nights in a row. Oh, and as much goes on the floor as into her mouth. Please tell me that throwing food down is a passing phase!!
ReplyDeleteLiza is really picky too and didn't use to be. I was so proud of my little one year old who would eat WHATEVER I placed before her. But as she got older, the desire to "control" everything in her world, carried over into eating. She only has a handful of foods she eats, NONE of which include veggies. I discovered that the more I fought it, the more my stubborn child refused it. SO I place her plate in front of her, with one thing i know she'll eat and she can choose not to eat anything else. (And honestly, as time went on, I've cared less and less and just give her whatever more nights than i'd like to admit). BUT over the passed couple weeks, i've seen a small amount of change. She'll eat turkey (deli meat) for fruit or crackers and we even got her to take 2 bites of green beans for a ritz cracker. I know I shouldn't bribe, but it worked. We try also not to make a big deal about it either way. "You don't want it? Ok, well you can get down then." or "Oh, you ate your turkey. do you want more? No, ok." In the meantime, she drinks V8 fusion drinks to get those nutrients and lots of peanut butter for protein!
