Who needs sleep?

Not me, if you ask Bennett. I have moved to the couch in the living room, and Bennett is just going to have to sleep in his swing. The poor boy has been crying, or at least awake, since I fed him at 6pm. I had to go to a Junior League meeting tonight, so I fed Bennett at 6, handed him over to Daddy at 6:35 or so, with the instructions to keep him awake until maybe 6:45 or 7 and then let him nap until I get home. Welllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll of course that isnt exactly what happened. My very male husband didn't exactly hear me clearly and thought I said keep him awake until 7:45??? or something to that effect. So I come home to an exhausted baby and a husband who has been waking the baby up every time he fell asleep for the past hour and a half. Hmmmmmmmmmm

So since 8pm (when I got home) I have fed Bennett twice and tried everything under the sun to stop him from crying. Of course he doesnt cry when we hold him, but its kind of hard to hold him while we go to sleep. He just sounds so in pain when he cries it breaks my heart. I know hes not hungry, he has a clean diaper, hes burped, not gassy.....its almost like he is crying bc he is so sleepy and the longer he is awake the harder it is for him to go to sleep???? I finally decided to ditch the marital bed and banish Bennett and myself to the couch in the den when Stephen suggested we stick Bennett in the shop (out in the carport) and let him cry it out. I thought 5 hours on and off was long enough for him to "cry it out."

Good news though, its 12:35 and Bennett's eyes are *finally* closed and he seems like he MIGHT be drifting off to sleep in his swing....

Of course when my usually angelic baby makes a turn like this (and in three weeks it has happened all of three or four times I think) my mind starts racing with thoughts like : is he becoming a colicky baby? does he have reflux? (bc he is a serious spitter-upper) is he possessed? do I know anything about any of this?

Whether I do or do not remains to be seen, but one thing I do know is that Bennett is asleep and when baby sleeps, I sleep. Good night!

  1. Ohh I feel for ya Natalie. Blake had an extremely fussy couple of days when he was 3 weeks old and of course I thought the worst .. colic, etc. But a few days later he was back to his happy, calm, sweet self! Wishing ya'll a restful night tonight!!

  2. I love your blog! I came across it from Summer's. I have a 10 month old. I think that you are right on track with everything and that if you do go past the window of opportunity for sleep time that they get overly tired and have a hard time falling asleep! I hope that tonight goes better!!

  3. Hey Nat! I've missed you! I've been out of town so I haven't been able to stalk for a while. Sorry to hear about your rough night! Jack did the same thing (still sometimes does) if he gets too tired (and after some daddy "bonding" adventures). I've spent my fair share of nights sleeping in our oversized red chair with him asleep on a boppy in my arms. Sometimes you've just gotta do what works! Sounds like you handeled it like a champ, as always. I've loved catching up on all of your posts!

  5. Oh my! I am so sorry you had such a rough night! Sounds like our little one likes a routine...at least for now! Or maybe he is just showing us who is in charge! :-) Just remember, there are TOTALLY willing grandparents around to babysit through the night if you just need to sleep alittle! Imagine that! :-) Love ya'll, La
