God Love the Silly Green Frog

Wow! Four months old! This morning Bennett gave me the best Happy Four Months Bennett present - what a selfless little infant I have......he grabbed this stinkin green frog and put it in his mouth! TWICE! Oh yes. You ask me - how, Natalie, did you get such an intelligent and wonderful little child prodigy? Weeeeeeelllllllll I'll tell you what - it wasn't easy.

Ok OK Ok...Seriously though, I have been dangling things in front of Bennett for over a month now, just to have him stare and smile. No grab. No arm thrust. No NOTHING. So crazy mommy is thinking: developmentally delayed? arm muscle delay? non-stimulating toys? just a plain ole lack of care and interest??? huh?? And sane mommy is thinking: well I guess he will just reach out when he is good and ready to reach out. Stop looking at everyone else's grabby babies and (gasp) comparing him to other babies his age. So I just patiently waited, waited with bright colorful exciting toys just within B's reach, until he decided it was time.

And today, on the four month anniversary of his birth, Bennett decides he is ready. He reached out, and grabbed this ridiculous green frog out of my hand, and brought it to his mouth. I think they could hear my squeal five houses down. Bennett then proceeded to grab several other toys, my phone, his paci, etc and place in mouth. YAY!

He is such a fun and cuddly little man. Cuddly seems to be a descriptive word I use often with him. Right after I put him to sleep, I already want to go right back in there, pick him up, and cuddle. Such a love. I cant get enough.

His doctor's appointment went well today. Bennett's pediatrician was out on her honeymoon, so we saw one of her partners who was great. He had four shots (ow!) and didn't cry too much. This time, however, I actually do think it hurt him more than me. Poor B. His stats:

Weight: 14lbs 2ounces 50%
Height: 26.5" 95%-almost off the charts?!?!
Head circumference: Don't remember but 50%

Follow up on the head circumference....Bennett has a flat head. (sorry 18 year old Bennett who is looking back and reading this as his Mom is talking about his poor flat head) I called the doc several weeks ago just to ask about it. I do every thing I can think of to prevent this, stopping shy of placing him on his tummy to sleep at night. He is up, on his tummy, etc all day long. But alas the boy's head is flat-ish. What to do? The doctor said to place him on his tummy as much as I can during the day. We will try to avoid the......the......helmet. Doctor doesn't think there is anything to worry about and that it will just fix itself as he learns to sit and holds himself up more. I think he is having this issue bc he has been sleeping 10-12 hrs a night since he was 9 weeks old, and he sleeps the same way every night (wont sleep on his side or anything, we have tried and he just rolls to his back): face straight up and hands above his head. Any suggestions????? Point being: I have a hunch his head would be a bit higher than the 50% if it was, well, rounded. Poor B. Again.

Rice cereal is going beautifully - he has it all figured out and opens his mouth and kicks his feet until I serve him more. I need a third hand to help shovel the cereal in hungry man's mouth. Dr said we could move on to Oatmeal cereal, which I am excited about bc the rice cereal seems to be a little bit of a constipator (is that a word? you get my drift). He also said that, whenever I feel it is time, I am welcome to start vegetables and then fruit. Im not in any hurry. We will see.

I love you Bennett Michael! Happy Four Months!

  2. You are so funny! YAY for Bennett! I can't get Carter to grab anything except my hair. Now that I know it took Bennett until four months, maybe I won't be so worried. :) Happy 4 months, Bennett!

  3. I wouldn't worry about his head one bit. He's PERFECT!! It will round out with time, don't worry. Also, I've come to learn babies do things in THEIR own time. Who really knows what's normal anyway.

  4. Hooray Bennett! I guess this secures a spot in the memory box for the kissy frog! Now, we can start guessing which hand Bennett will use the most! I vote left! Hahaha! Love ya, La

  5. So funny! I liked this post - substitute "wanting your child to be grabby" with any other developmental stages that are to come and you've got the first year and more of mother's worries! (does that make sense??) If you don't mind I'm going to add you to my blog links so I can check on what's going on in little Bennett's world. He's a cutie!!

  7. What I wouldn't give for my 10 month old to sleep just 8 hours a night. I'm so jealous! Boys must sleep better than girls...that has got to be it right? Happy 4 months old!
